What Is Incontinence?

Incontinence is an involuntary leakage of urine. As children, boys tend to suffer more from bed wetting since girls develop the ability to control their bladder earlier. On the other hand, older women are subject to suffer from incontinence due to:
- Anatomical structure of the lower urinary system
- Pregnancy and birth implications.
- Nerve damage interfering the connection between the brain and the urinary bladder.

Man might suffer from incontinence due to:
- Prostate problems
- Nerve damage interfering the connection between the brain and the urinary bladder.

Although incontinence issues increase relatively with age, it is avoidable and as a medical condition can be diagnosed and treated (considering the natural embarrassment one might have dealing with it).

There are 4 main causes for urine leakage :
- Temporary incontinence caused by an infection in the urinary system , constipation or mental issue.
- Weakness of urinary bladder muscles or weakness of the internal sphincter or external sphincter.
- Damaged or involuntary stimulated nerves.
- Leakage caused duo to the inability to empty your bladder.

How Does The Urinary System Works ?

The urinary system is built out of the next structures:
- Kidneys
- Ureters (transferring urine from the kidney's renal pelvis to the bladder)
- Bladder
- Urethra
- Internal / External Sphincters

The Functions Of the Urinary System are:
- filtration of blood
- Re absorption of vital nutriments
- Secretion of excess materials
- Activation of Vitamin D
- Release of Erythropoietin
- Release of Renin by the kidneys
- Release of Prostaglandins

Different processes in our body create waste. Digestion system waste is accumulated in the Rectum, and becomes solid by returning some of the fluids to the body and taken out. The Urea (the outcome of excreted protein waste) is accumulated in our blood and removed from it by the kidneys. It is filtered by small filtering units called Nephrons. after filtering urinary is led to the bladder through the ureters. Both Ureter's side walls are contracting every 10 sec or so to prevent urinary from going back to the kidneys.

The urine is now accumulated in the Bladder which is a balloon like muscle stated near the pelvic floor anchored by ligaments. In a healthy situation ,the bladder can hold up to 350-400ml of fluid for 2-5 hours. The circular muscles called the Sphincters prevent the urine from leaking out.

When we want to pee , the brain sends signals to the bladder to contract and also expand signals to the sphincters. if the signals from the brain comes in the right order ,we can pee smoothly.

In order for the urinary system to do its job, muscles and nerves related to it must function in coordination to accumulate the urine and release it when needed.Babies ,for example, are not born with this ability and when a child is growing ,learning to translate the messages from his brain will help develop full control of his bladder muscles and sphincters thus stay dry.

Children between the age of 5-10 will sometimes suffer from incontinence due to low capacity of the bladder or a delay in the development of nerve routes leading to the bladder.

Older men may suffer from Incontinence due to nerve system issues or prostate issues.
